The United States is deploying a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel, accompanied by approximately 100 U.S. troops to manage its operations. The announcement from the Pentagon follows a warning from Iran advising the U.S. to keep its military forces out of Israel. This deployment signifies an enhancement to Israel's defense arsenal with one of the most sophisticated missile defense systems globally.

The THAAD system comprises at least six truck-mounted launchers, each capable of holding up to eight interceptors. This advanced system can detect incoming threats with its radar and neutralize short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. In conjunction with Israel's existing Iron Dome and David’s Sling systems, THAAD offers an additional protective layer as Israel plans a measured response to Iran's missile attack.

While Israel's Iron Dome can intercept threats within a 4km to 70km range, THAAD extends this capability with target acquisition ranges reaching up to 200km. The decision to bolster Israel’s defense comes in light of vulnerabilities revealed by previous attacks, including Hezbollah's assault on Ben Yamina. As Israel deliberates its strategy against Tehran, the U.S. has cautioned against targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities to avoid substantial escalation.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System, or THAAD, is said to be the latest addition to Israel's arsenal, courtesy of its top ally, the United States. Along with Israel's Iron Dome and David's Sling, THAAD adds an extra layer of protection for the country as it prepares what it says will be a precise and powerful retaliation for Iran's ballistic missile attack on October 1st. October's barrage as well as Sunday's deadly Hezbollah drone attack on Ben Yamina exposed some of the weaknesses in Israel's air defences. Its most well-known shield, the Iron Dome, can only intercept rockets at ranges of between 4km to 70km, while THAAD can acquire targets at ranges of up to 200km. Washington also says it will send approximately 100 soldiers to operate THAAD within Israel. For analysts, the move risks dragging the U.S. into a war it doesn't want to be directly involved in. Iran for its part says it does not seek war, but its foreign minister warned that the deployment puts the lives of U.S. troops at risk. As Israel mulls a response to Tehran, Washington has warned it against striking Iran's nuclear sites, saying it would be a major escalation.
