Jose Antonio Kast has been elected president of Chile, becoming the country's first far-right leader since its return to democracy 35 years ago. Kast secured victory by more than 16 percentage points over his Communist Party rival, Janet Jara, who conceded and wished him well.

Kast campaigned on a hard-line law-and-order platform, promising to address rising crime and undocumented migration. The election result has sparked debate over his support for Chile's former military dictatorship, though many of his voters reject tributes to that era. Outgoing president Gabriel Boric announced plans to resign from his party to help bridge divisions following the contentious campaign.

Chile has chosen to break with decades of moderate left and right-wing governance by choosing Jose Antonio Cast. I will be the president of all Chileans. We need you all for the rebirth of Chile. We are going to have a difficult year, a hard one, but it will require the commitment and the effort of everyone. His Communist Party rival, Janet Jara, put on a brave face and acknowledged her defeat by more than 16 percentage points, wishing Cast well for the good of Chile. It's been a bitter defeat, too, for left-wing president Gabriel Boric, who nonetheless called Cast to congratulate him, as is the custom here. Cast won on a hard-line law-and-order agenda, promising to combat rising crime, undocumented migration, and left-wing ideology, which he says has deteriorated peace and security. Cast is someone who firmly supported Chile's former military dictatorship. And the people here carrying flags of that leader, General Augusto Pinochet, are validating that dictatorship. So that raises the question, how far to the right does Chile's next president intend to veer? Many who voted for Cast say they don't agree with tributes to Pinochet. I lament those types of expressions because they represent a tiny fraction of people. They don't represent the vast majority of those who are celebrating here. We're tired of bad government, and I think this is the best option we have. Boric says he'll be making major changes, starting by his announcement here to resign from his ultra-conservative Republican Party, to make it easier, he says, to breach the deep divisions left by this election campaign.
