Washington state is under a state of emergency following a week of torrential rains that caused widespread flooding, washed away homes, and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents. First responders rescued about 300 people, and four rivers reached record heights, while additional National Guard troops have been deployed to assist with recovery and prepare for further storms.

Although floodwaters have begun to recede in some areas, many homes remain surrounded by water and significant property damage has occurred. Officials warn that more rain is expected soon, raising concerns about renewed flooding and landslides in already saturated communities.

Now to the weather. First, the snow and dangerous cold. This is Springboro, Ohio today. The snow falling along with the mercury as an icy air mass descends from Canada. Some 50 million people in the Midwest to the East Coast area forecast to experience single digit temperatures this weekend. In waterlogged Washington state, a break from the relentless rain that caused catastrophic flooding. CBS's Nicole Valdez is in Burlington, Washington tonight with more on that part of the story. Nicole. Dorica, good evening. Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders, and some homes are still surrounded by water. And unfortunately, there's more rain coming. Washington is under a state of emergency after torrential rains swamped communities. The week-long deluge washed away homes, caused rivers to overflow, and forced aerial rescues, including people on roofs. We're grabbing two right now, and one dog. Washington officials say first responders whisked about 300 people to safety. The storm's so intense that four rivers reached record-breaking heights. In Oregon, a massive landslide shut down a portion of a freeway just outside Portland. The frays, the cabinets, it's all done. A needed break in the rain today gave Adrian Zuniga a chance to start the cleanup of his family's soaked home in Burlington, where more than a foot of water rushed in. Water started flowing nonstop. I never expected it to be like this. We are starting to see it finally recede out of the neighborhoods. Bill Aslett is the city's mayor. I've been here four years, and this is the most water we've ever had in town. More National Guard troops arrived in Washington overnight to prepare for the next storm. One the Zuniga family worries could only add to the tens of thousands of dollars in damage. There's a chance you guys could see more rain in the next few days. Oh yeah, I've heard. What is that like to think about? At this point, I'm like, if it happens again, then I'm just gonna give up. And it's sure to be a tense next few days as people here are anticipating another round of storms that could arrive as early as Sunday, one that could once again cause landslides and flooding on already saturated towns.
