Ongoing conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border has resulted in the relocation of over half a million people, while some residents, such as trained volunteers, have chosen to remain and help guard their communities. Recent fighting has included renewed Thai airstrikes, and both sides continue to accuse each other of violating a ceasefire agreement reached in October.

Thailand has released evidence alleging that Cambodian troops have laid landmines, which have injured several Thai soldiers. Cambodia, however, maintains that the mines were placed during the civil war in the 1980s. Many residents continue to move to evacuation centres as the situation remains tense.

Fighting continues along Thai-Cambodia border

More than half a million people have been moved away from the conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border. Yet some have chosen to stay, like Somjai, whose village in Thailand is just 10 kilometres from Cambodia. After the fighting in July, she completed a three-day course in weapons training and patrol techniques. Somjai helps guard empty houses, keeps an eye out for strangers and feeds the dogs. This is my priority. The other things I let the men take care of. I'm not good at going out patrolling at night. Fortunately, I'm good with dogs. A warning is sounded. Cambodian rockets may be incoming. A reminder of how dangerous this conflict has become. Trained volunteers who choose to remain are allowed to carry guns. In a nearby village, volunteers have started wearing uniforms. We work without any compensation for nothing in return. We do it of our own will for the brothers and sisters in our village. There was intense fighting along the border on Saturday, including renewed Thai airstrikes. And while some choose to stay, many more are moving to these evacuation centres. Each side accuses the other of violating the October ceasefire agreement. Thailand has released what it says is evidence of Cambodian troops laying landmines that have injured several Thai soldiers.
