A United Airlines Boeing 777 experienced an engine failure during takeoff from Washington's Dulles Airport on a flight bound for Tokyo. The incident caused multiple brush fires near the runway, but emergency crews responded quickly, and the aircraft dumped fuel before returning for a safe landing.

All passengers deplaned normally with no injuries reported. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the cause of the engine failure, and the aircraft was confirmed to be certified for single-engine operation in such situations.

Today, a fiery start for a United Airlines jetliner taking off from Washington's Dulles Airport, bound for Tokyo. CBS's Ali Bauman is tracking this story for us. Ali, what do we know? Jerika, the Boeing 777 is a wide-body jet with two large engines designed for long hauls. It became apparent that one of the engines on this flight was having a problem during takeoff. We've had a United 777, losing engine on departure runway one center. The 777 jet, like this one, lost the use of one of its engines during liftoff. The incident sparked multiple brush fires near the runway. I've got numerous areas on the grass that are on fire. Flight 803 left Dulles, headed for Tokyo at 1220 today. Flight records reviewed by CBS News found the jet was in the air for about 44 minutes. Emergency crews reported that the flight dumped fuel, then landed without incident. Former National Transportation Safety Board Chair, Robert Sumwalt. Well, this is very rare, thankfully, but the point I wanna make is, the airplane is certified for single-engine operations. It is certified to go across the ocean and lose an engine and be able to fly for at least three hours. The flight was towed to the gate after landing.
