Medical professionals gathered at the third Canadian symposium on long COVID to emphasize that the condition remains prevalent and is often underdiagnosed. Dr. Mike Hall, a pediatrician and co-chair of the event, stated that one in five people experience long COVID, with cases continuing to rise. He shared personal experiences as a caregiver for his wife, who faces ongoing symptoms that impact daily life. 

A recent study cited at the symposium found long COVID to be the most common chronic illness among children. Dr. Catherine Clark, a family physician, stressed the need for greater awareness among healthcare providers to ensure patients are properly diagnosed. Currently, there is no approved treatment for long COVID, and experts recommend preventive measures such as proper ventilation, masking, and vaccination.

COVID is not over. That's the message from medical professionals who gathered in St. John's earlier this month for the third Canadian symposium on long COVID. St. John's pediatrician Dr. Mike Hall was the co-chair for the event. He says people think it's a rare condition but it's not. One in five people have long COVID and it's increasing over time. You know, COVID never went away. People think that it's disappeared, it's no longer an issue that we should be concerned about. COVID continues to happen and with that there's a percentage of people who are getting long COVID. So really we're seeing more and more cases of long COVID. Dr. Hall is also a caregiver for his wife who has long COVID. So a lot of it is at the start is learning, sort of looking at the the symptoms. You know, my wife went through a lot of different things initially. She had respiratory issues and cardiac issues and then the brain fog ensued. And it's a condition that changes. You know, some days are good and some days are not. So it's trying to figure out, you know, what this is all about. And so, and my wife is very smart. She was in the know thinking about long COVID and saw things on social media and she would say to me, my brain is not working well. I need you to read these articles and sort it out for me as to where all this fits in. So I've been trying to be her right-hand man to try and support her through all this. But our life has changed. You know, things that we could do, you know, my wife is very active. We'd obviously have plans to travel, to do different things and a lot of this had to change. I know it changes on the day-to-day things. Dr. Hall says a recent study that looked at long COVID in children found that it's the most common chronic illness in that demographic. He says this is important for doctors to be aware of and others at the event agreed. Dr. Catherine Clark is a family physician. She says long COVID is under diagnosed. I think we just need to bring awareness. I think that's the biggest thing is just reminding patients or physicians even that long COVID isn't over. It's still out there. You need to think about it. You need to have it on your differential so these people don't fall through the cracks. Meanwhile, there is still no approved treatment for long COVID. So Dr. Hall says in order to prevent folks from getting it, you need proper ventilation, masking and also he says get the vaccine. Adam Walsh, CBC News, St. John's.
