The Weather Channel's meteorologist Carl Parker shows new technology that can better predict where it might flood.

The Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) Hydro model has been developed to provide advanced and continuous guidance on water levels and potential flooding across the United States. By integrating weather, environmental, and topographical data, the model seeks to improve the accuracy and timeliness of flood warnings, aiming for eventual street-level forecasts.

Currently in its first version, the model is being refined through case studies of past floods, such as the Blanco River event and recent floods in Louisiana, Houston, and South Carolina. NOAA is already utilizing the model to support its mission of protecting lives and property, with future plans to make real-time water information accessible to the public via mobile apps.

Predicting where it will flood

The power of water, devastating, even deadly. So what if we could have more advanced warning for floods? Enter this, the Weather Research Forecasting, or WRF, Hydro model. It combines all kinds of data, weather, environmental, topographical, and more, providing comprehensive and continuous forecast guidance about water levels across the U.S., including where and when it might flood, and when it will end. The ultimate goal is to get down to really street-level forecasting. It's a very difficult problem. It's going to take many years to really get to that true capability. Dr. David Gotges of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, or NCAR, is the lead scientist on the model. It's still very early. This is the first version of the model, so there's a lot to continue to improve upon. And developer Aubrey Dugger's job is to evaluate how the model is doing and make improvements. We looked at a case study in the Blanco River flood. The river rose 35 feet in about four hours. That's the astronomical amount of water. And I think we might have been able to give them a few more hours' notice on this event, which is, you know, can be very critical when you're talking about evacuation plans. The team has also looked at the recent flooding in Louisiana, Houston, and South Carolina, in addition to Hurricane Irmine, among other events. Moving forward, I think people will start to become more and more familiar with the kinds of products that are coming out of the National Water Model, and more importantly, how to interpret them. NOAA is currently using the model as a tool in its arsenal. NOAA became interested in this technology more in terms of fulfilling their direct mission of protection of lives and property. Let's hope one day to, like traffic apps, allow you to pull up the water information you need right on your phone in real time.
