The release has sparked discussion surrounding the implications of sharing military information in unsecured communications. The texts reportedly reveal specific details regarding military operations in Yemen, such as exact times, weapons, and aircraft used during attacks.

In the messages, shared through Signal, the then-Defense Secretary disclosed sensitive military details, prompting backlash and calls for accountability from certain lawmakers. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed a letter to the president expressing that the actions endangered American lives and might have broken the law. Despite these concerns, former President Trump defended his team, including National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, who admitted to mistakenly adding an Atlantic journalist to the group chat. Waltz, who took responsibility for the oversight, stated that he did not personally know the journalist.

Senate hearings have involved questioning key figures, such as CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who were participants in the chat. The discussions have revolved around whether any classified information was potentially compromised. While the officials claim no classified material was shared, the discussions on the timing of U.S. airstrikes and their operational details were scrutinized. The Signal app, used for these communications, was flagged by the National Security Agency as a potential risk, given its appeal to intercept sensitive data.

The Atlantic says it's now publishing the full text because it believes there is a clear public interest in disclosing the sort of information that Trump advisers included in unsecure communications, and because the White House is trying to downplay the significance of the messages. The full texts now reveal the defense secretary used the unsecure group to share exact times, weapons and aircraft used to carry out the attacks, when they'd strike, and what happened in the aftermath. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in a letter to the president said Hegseth's behavior risked American lives and likely violated the law. There was no classified information as I understand it. At a Senate hearing on worldwide threats, Democrats grilled CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who were in the group chat. There was no classified material that was shared in that signal. So then if there was no classified material, share it with the committee. You can't have it both ways. Some asked for details about the messages sent. They're talking about the timing of U.S. airstrikes, correct? Yes. Yes. And therefore, the timing of sending U.S. air crews into hostile airspace, correct? Yes. But in some cases, Gabbard pointed senators elsewhere. So the attack sequencing and timing and weapons and targets you don't consider to, should have been classified? I defer to the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Council. And after the release of the new details from the Atlantic, Gabbard and Ratcliffe are going to face more questions today at a House hearing on Capitol Hill. Also notable, the text chain took place on the encrypted messaging app Signal. And CBS News has learned that late last month, the National Security Agency warned in this memo against using the app, saying its popularity made it a quote, high value target to intercept sensitive information.
