China’s plan to build a radio telescope in Argentina has been halted by President Javier Milei’s government, coinciding with a major U.S. financial bailout.

Despite the project's halt, trade between Argentina and China is increasing, with Chinese exports to Argentina rising 66 percent in the past year. Experts and former diplomats have called for a balanced foreign policy that prioritizes Argentina's interests amid growing US-China competition in the region.

Milei scraps plan to build radio telescope with China

The stars are more visible from the Felix Aguila Astronomical Observatory in Argentina. And that's also why China chose the site to build a radio telescope. But works were stopped by Javier Millet's government recently. That coincided with a crucial financial bailout by the U.S. government. The Trump administration suspects the radio telescope could have a military application, a claim the University of San Juan, the project's Argentinian partner, strongly denies. It could have very limited military use as surrounding elevations greatly obstruct the view of anything on the surface. Also the military use that a radio telescope can have depends mainly on whether it has a transmitter to use as a radar. This radio telescope does not have a transmitter. The astronomer says that the radio telescope is designed to move at the apparent speed of the stars due to the Earth's rotation, a hundred times slower than the required speed to track satellites and aircraft. Gonzalez believes China needs this location for observing distant galaxies, a project that's also valuable for studying tectonic plate movements. They want an observation base that's the separation between the two antennas as large as possible. Other observation centers were also challenged when the U.S. announced the financial bailout. It claimed Malay was committed to kicking China out of Argentina. They've also criticized a Chinese-backed port project in Tierra del Fuego. And there is a clear interest in reversing Chinese progress in mining and building telecommunications technology across Argentina. Meanwhile, trade with China is surging. Chinese exports to Argentina have grown 66 percent over the past year, with the arrival of several Chinese brands, thanks to Malay's trade liberalization policies. In October, the Dolphin Mini was the best-selling electric vehicle in Argentina, which is an impressive result for a newcomer. Everyone's here because of zero tariffs. In response to Malay's alignment with Trump, José Octavio Bordón, the former president of the Argentine Council of International Relations and former ambassador to the U.S., says a more nuanced foreign policy is needed. If the president feels comfortable with Donald Trump and the U.S. government, he has every right. But he has to take advantage of that to come up with the best foreign policy in line with the interests of Argentina, not to be subordinated to the games of a great power. Whether Beijing will respond to the halting of the radio telescope construction remains unknown. It has already cost China 24 million dollars, and an additional 4 million dollars was invested by Argentina.
