House Republicans are set to vote again on their health care bill, but divisions within the party remain a significant obstacle. Traditional conservatives, moderates, and economic populists have differing views on subsidy extensions and the future of the Affordable Care Act, making consensus difficult.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune criticized the Democratic approach to health care, arguing it benefits insurance companies at taxpayer expense. The segment also addressed recent violent incidents, with calls for restraint and further investigation before drawing conclusions about motivations.

To discuss, let's bring in White House reporter at The Washington Times, Jeff Mordoch, along with White House reporter at Politico, Megan Messerly. Welcome to National Update. Thank you for having us. Thank you. You bet. So this week, House Republicans will try again with their vote on their version of a health care bill. Megan, are we any closer to a solution? You know, that's the million dollar question. There are a lot of competing interests here, even within the Republican caucus, right? You have sort of the traditional Republican folks who have longstanding concerns about the Affordable Care Act and don't want to see anything like the subsidy extension move forward. You have a contingent of moderate Republicans who are really worried about reelection and say that these subsidies expiring is really going to hurt their constituents and their districts. And then I'll say you have the third camp of sort of economic populace. I'm thinking of Missouri Senator Josh Hawley, who's really, you know, voiced that argument that this is going to hurt people, but really approaching this from a perspective of this is not something, you know, we as a Republican Party need to be opposed to. And so really this constellation of forces pushing on this conversation, and that's why it's been so hard to come to some sort of consensus. Yeah. Based on the difficulty of this consensus, Jeff, turning to you here, do you think we'll see another government shutdown at the end of next month over the very same issue? It's possible. We really haven't resolved any, as you pointed out, we haven't resolved any of the issues that have led to the first government shutdown. And both parties tend to feel like they've benefited from the first shutdown in the fact that the Democrats were able to pin a lot of that on Trump. President Trump was able to use a lot of that to carry out some of his agenda of slashing government spending, trying to, I know the courts reversed it, but trying to use it to lay employees off. So from that, it would not entirely surprise me if we end up back where we were a month ago next month. While Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune, he slammed Democrats and their plan to put insurance companies on blast. Take a listen. What Obamacare does, because it, it uses taxpayer dollars to subsidize and pay insurance companies directly. It doesn't go directly to the insurance companies. So insurance companies are making bank. They're getting enriched by this. But what it does at the same time is there's no incentive to control costs. It's not going to do anything to address the perverse incentives that encourage insurance companies to enrich themselves. The taxpayer expense can do nothing to address the rampant waste, fraud, and abuse in Obamacare. And most of all, Mr. President, it will do nothing. So Megan, he's basically saying Democrats created this mess and Republicans simply want to expose the waste, fraud, and abuse of their policies. Do you agree with the majority leader's assessment here? You know, this is something that Republicans have been voicing concern about for a long, long time, right? Since these conversations over the Affordable Care Act started happening. So what I think you see here is sort of reflective of, you know, the messaging argument that I think we can see Republicans making going into the midterm elections, you know, especially if there is no solution to be had here, right? President Trump has been very on message here in his line that, you know, we Republicans want to give this money to the people. Democrats want to give money to insurance companies. I've talked to Republican strategists outside the White House who see that as a very effective line of argument, one that will resonate with voters as we're having these broader conversations about affordability and as voters continue to express concerns about, you know, the pinch on their household budgets that they're feeling. And so I think that's what you see reflected in, you know, Leader Thune's comments there is this, you know, attack line that they're going to use to push back on Democrats who, you know, are really eager to make health care a focus in the midterm elections. Well, Jeff, before you go, I want to hear your thoughts on this past weekend of violence, the attack on Brown University and the Jewish community in Australia. Some on the left blame guns. What do you say to those politicizing this tragedy? And what's your message for faith and healing here? I think all of this is a tragedy from what happened at Brown to what happened at Australia to even the death of Rob Reiner, all of that, and his wife, all of that is a tremendous tragedy that's occurring right now at Christmas, at the holiday season. I think we need to step back right now. We don't have a motivation in the Brown shooting. We really aren't sure of the motivation in the Reiner stabbing. I think we need to step back, see what we get when we get the suspects, what their motivation was, and I think that will help illuminate how the conversation goes from from here.
