Fighting along the border between Thailand and Cambodia has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people from both countries. Many affected families are struggling to find shelter and basic necessities, with the conflict zone designated as a Restricted Access Disaster Zone.

The conflict is rooted in a long-standing territorial dispute, but recent developments indicate domestic political factors are intensifying the situation. Human Rights Watch reports that leaders in both countries are leveraging nationalism to strengthen their political positions, with Thailand's Prime Minister dissolving Parliament and calling a snap election following the outbreak of violence.

Cambodians who fled fighting along the border with Thailand find shelter where they can. I have young children and a disabled mother. I don't have money to buy medicine for my children and my mother, so it is very difficult. Hundreds of thousands of people have also fled homes in Thailand, like the family of three who left this house before it was hit. The owner's brother remains as a village volunteer. I don't know who's gaining anything, villagers or soldiers. I don't know who benefits from this, but this directly impacts villagers like us, and it's a struggle. Most traffic is military, with the entire area designated a Restricted Access Disaster Zone. A French map created in 1907 that triggered a territory dispute between Thailand and Cambodia may have sparked this conflict. But domestic politics is now undoubtedly playing a role. Human Rights Watch says the leaders of both countries are benefiting from the war. They are using growing nationalism in the face of cross-border fighting to boost their popularity and distract the population. Thailand's Prime Minister Anathin Chanvirakun was facing a no-confidence vote in Parliament over alleged mishandling of the economy and severe flooding. When fighting fled a week ago, Anathin dissolved Parliament and announced a snap election. Nationalism has turned him into the strongest candidate in the upcoming election. With a much smaller army and military budget, Cambodians are aware their country is vulnerable. I would like to ask the US President to put pressure on Thailand to quickly reach an agreement and allow the people to return home. An agreement that may have to wait until after a Thai election.
