Australia's National Cabinet has reached an agreement to strengthen gun laws, particularly in New South Wales, following recent concerns. The leaders plan to review the National Firearms Agreement, first established after the 1996 Port Arthur shooting, and to expedite the creation of a National Firearms Register. 

Additional measures under consideration include limiting the number of firearms an individual can own and requiring Australian citizenship for firearm licenses. The next steps will be coordinated by state leaders and relevant ministers, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasizing the need for tougher and unified laws across the country.

National Cabinet has met this evening agreeing Australia's gun laws need to change. Network political editor Ashley Roper joins me now for more on this and Ash, what did they decide? Ursula, nothing immediate but there has been agreement that gun laws will be strengthened in New South Wales. The National Firearms Agreement that was established by John Howard after the 1996 Port Arthur shooting that will be looked at. Also what they're looking at are a number of other things. Speeding up the setup of the already announced National Firearms Register. Limiting the number of firearms being held by one person. No number has been released as part of the consideration and another thing they'll look at is making Australian citizenship a condition of having a firearm license. What happens now is that the work will be transferred to police ministers and attorneys generals to come up with options state-by-state. Chris Minns the Premier of New South Wales and Roger Cook the Premier of Western Australia where they've already tightened gun laws will oversee and coordinate this response. The Prime Minister wants laws to be tougher but also unified across jurisdictions. So this will take time. Anthony Albanese wants to publicise that the first steps have been taken today because he does not want to be criticised for inaction. So this work will roll on and the nation will be watching Ursula.
