Toronto Blue Jays fans have faced significant challenges securing tickets for the team's first World Series appearance in over 30 years, as high demand and limited availability have driven up prices. While season ticket holders were able to purchase tickets at lower prices, general public tickets reportedly started at $500 and quickly sold out, with many ending up on resale platforms at much higher prices—some exceeding $2,500.

The surge in resale prices has led to renewed scrutiny of Ticketmaster and calls for regulatory action in Ontario, where previous rules limiting resale prices were removed in 2019. There is currently no federal legislation in Canada regulating ticket resales, leaving the market largely unregulated. Ticketmaster offers a 'Face Value Exchange' program to limit resale profits, but its use depends on artist or event organizer participation, and it is unclear if it was applied for the World Series.

Blue Jays fans raced to score a ticket to watch the World Series. Season ticket holders were able to buy in advance for better prices before the general public got a crack at tickets, reportedly starting at $500 each. Prices were just a little too high outside of my budget. For the first World Series game in more than 30 years, and with fans coming from across the country, there's huge demand for just 40,000 seats. I was like 800 in the queue and I just took too long. Those things were flying. But because the online queue included hundreds of thousands, many left empty-handed. It's so unfair and it's so frustrating. Anger not so much at missing out, but because many tickets sold were promptly listed for resale at huge markups. $5,000! The cheapest now available on Ticketmaster, more than $2,500. To think that people from who knows where bought these tickets and just jacked them up beatily, it's just so disheartening. Greg Overmans hoped to take his young son to the game. He says Ticketmaster and its practices deserve more scrutiny. To me it's just wondering how can that system be more fair to people who are real fans. U.S. regulators sued Ticketmaster last month, accusing the company of using illegal tactics in ticket resales. My personal opinion, I've got to talk to the whole team, but they're gouging the people. When you have one player in the market that controls the tickets, that's not right for the people. Ontario now considering regulations to limit resale ticket prices, although there were rules in place that the Ford government scrapped in 2019. A big problem in Canada is we do not have federal legislation regulating the resale of tickets to any event. The open market rules most of the time. From sporting events to major concerts... Consumer outrage over resale ticket prices is growing. What kind of society do we want to have? Is it one where pricing is constantly calibrated to capitalize on the maximum that somebody will spend? CBC reached out to Ticketmaster with questions, but we didn't hear back from the company. And Nisha, there is a measure through Ticketmaster that could help control high resale prices. That's right, Erica. Ticketmaster does have a program called Face Value Exchange. It's a service where anyone who buys a ticket and wants to resell it has to do so at face value. That limits reselling for profit. Artists like Pearl Jam, Oasis, and Billie Eilish have used it, and an artist has to opt into the program. For the World Series, though, it's still not clear who would have made that decision. Nisha Patel in Toronto.
