Trout stated he was unaware of Skaggs using drugs other than marijuana and alcohol, but expressed suspicions about Eric Kay, the former Angels communications director convicted in connection with Skaggs' death. 

The Skaggs family is seeking $118 million in damages, claiming the Angels are liable for Skaggs' fatal overdose, which occurred after Kay provided him a counterfeit oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl. The Angels deny responsibility, arguing Skaggs took the drugs privately. Following Skaggs' death, Major League Baseball began random opioid testing for players.

His testimony is part of a civil suit brought by Skaggs' family, accusing the Angels organization of being liable for the drug overdose that killed Skaggs back in 2019 during a team road trip. The 27-year-old was found dead in a suburban Dallas hotel room after Angels communications director Eric Kay gave him a counterfeit oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl. Kay was later convicted and sentenced to 22 years in federal prison. The ball club denies responsibility, arguing Skaggs took the drugs on his own private time. Trout, a three-time American League MVP who hit his 400th home run this year, told the courtroom Kay wanted to be liked by the players and that they would offer him money to perform stunts. But Trout said a clubhouse attendant insinuated Kay might be using the money for a bad purpose. Trout observed Kay sweating and looking wired and said it was clear Kay was using something. He just didn't know what it was. Trout testified that he talked to Kay about his suspicion and offered him help. Skaggs became a regular in the Angels starting rotation, but he struggled with constant injuries. As a result of his death, Major League Baseball started randomly testing players for opioids.
