A mass shooting occurred at Bondi Beach, where a father and son armed with guns and homemade bombs targeted Sydney's Jewish community during the first night of Hanukkah. The attack resulted in 15 fatalities, including community leaders and children, and left at least 42 people injured. 

The violence ended after a bystander, Ahmed El Ahmed, tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen. The community is now focusing on healing, with many praising the courage of those who intervened and emphasizing the importance of supporting one another in the aftermath.

Our family was ripped apart. Our family has been shredded. We have suffered an almighty blow here from which I fear we will never recover. 24-year-old Naveed Akrim and his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akrim, killed 15 innocent people before Sajid was gunned down. The victims' age ranges from as young as 10 to 87. A devastating fact. Among the dead, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a father of five and devoted community leader. He just, every part of his being was positivity. And, you know, we lost a good one. Alex Kleitman, who fled Ukraine after the horrors of the Holocaust, died protecting his wife of 57 years. In the middle of the celebration, it was shot and unfortunately my husband was killed. Former police officer Peter Maher, Frenchman Dan Elkayam and Rabbi Yaakov Levitan were also killed. The youngest victim, just 10 years old, Matilda, was supposed to be celebrating Hanukkah with her little sister who was by her side when she was shot. At least 42 people were injured in the massacre. The bullets only stopping after this incredible act of courage. Ahmed El Ahmed tackling and disarming the gunman with his bare hands. The shopkeeper believing he was going to die but deciding to do it anyway. He was going to die, that's it. You thought he was going to die as well? Yes. His bravery along with the lifeguards, police officers and bystanders who ran to help, praised for saving lives. People rushing towards danger to show the best of the Australian character. That's who we are. People who stand up for our values. While the investigations continue, the community's focus now turns to healing. You know, we all come together and make sure that, you know, we look after each other, you know, and just be there for each other. Finding the light in the darkest of days.
