As the government shutdown enters its second day, lawmakers are preparing for another vote to fund the government, but no agreement appears imminent. President Trump has publicly encouraged Republicans to use the shutdown as an opportunity to eliminate what he describes as 'dead wood, waste, and fraud' in the federal workforce, and continues to advocate for layoffs of federal employees.

Federal workers, including those with exemptions, are expressing anxiety about the possibility of permanent job losses. The administration views the shutdown as a chance to advance its longstanding goal of reducing government size and spending. Both parties are actively assigning blame for the shutdown, with Republicans emphasizing their willingness to keep the government open and Democrats being urged to support a funding bill. The risk of political fallout remains high for the party in power, as the effects of the shutdown are felt by workers across the country.

And now to our other top story. Lawmakers are calling on another vote tomorrow to try and fund the government, but it doesn't seem as if either side is really willing to make a deal. This is a live look at the Capitol Dome for you as we approach day two of a shutdown with both sides blaming the other. President Trump posted this online overnight, saying, quote, Republicans must use this opportunity of Democrat forced closure to clear out dead wood, waste, and fraud. Billions of dollars can be saved, end quote. And he's still pushing for layoffs of federal workers. The president spoke with One American News about this. Listen. Well, there could be firings, and that's their fault, and it could also be other things. I mean, we could cut projects that they wanted, favorite projects, and they'd be permanently cut. And federal workers are already feeling the punch. Last night on the takeout, Major Garrett spoke to a single mom who's been furloughed. Do you have any fear, Stephanie, as an FDA microbiologist, you could be not just furloughed temporarily like every other federal employee, but fired? I do have fear. I have a lot of fear, and it keeps me up at night. My children also are afraid. Now, we know that our FDA commissioner has said that our agency has an exemption, but we just never know day to day because everything seems to change. So there's always this trepidation and this fear that perhaps tomorrow it will be a different answer. CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Nancy Cordes joins us with more on all of this. Nancy, good morning. As we heard there, the president seems comfortable to blame Democrats and cut at things that are Democratic priorities, but is there a risk for Republicans throughout this shutout, considering they've got the executive branch and two chambers of Congress, a majority there? There's definitely a risk. Often the party in power does get blamed when there is a shutdown, and that's why they have been out there messaging so aggressively. You see the Speaker of the House making the rounds, obviously the president doing interviews. The vice president was in the White House briefing room yesterday making the case that they wanted to keep the government open, that all Democrats needed to do was join Republicans in passing a straight bill to keep the government funded for the next 50 days. At the same time, they do see this as an opportunity, Errol. This is an administration that has been focused from the very earliest days on cutting government waste, on cutting federal jobs, and they believe that this is a prime opportunity to do so and to make that case. And beyond the fact that it's a policy priority for them, they also believe that it is leverage for them because they know that this is something that makes Democrats very nervous, that perhaps might prompt even the handful of Democrats they need to get off the fence and vote for this bill simply because they are so concerned that government workers, especially federal workers in their own states, could end up seeing their jobs cut as a result of this shutdown. Yeah, pain to be felt by many in the meantime. Nancy, thank you very much.
