Police responded to an incident near Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester after reports of a car being driven at members of the public and a stabbing. The suspect was shot by police upon arrival and is believed to be dead. Two people were killed and three others injured in the attack. Local media report that the attacker did not enter the synagogue, and security staff intervened to protect those inside. Authorities have deployed bomb disposal units to the scene and are increasing police presence at synagogues nationwide.

The police here say they were called to the Heaton Park Synagogue just after 9.30 this morning local time after a report of a car being driven at members of the public and a stabbing. The police arrived within 10 minutes and shot the suspect who's believed to be dead. Two people were killed in the attack and three injured. Now according to a local media report the attacker did not get inside the synagogue itself. The mayor of Manchester told our partners at the BBC that security at the synagogue intervened to keep many people safe. One video appears to show a police officer warning people that the attacker has a bomb. The police say the bomb disposal unit is at the scene. Last year the British government committed extra funding around $100 million to protect synagogues and Jewish schools. There are around 300,000 Jewish people living here in the UK. The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he is appalled by this attack on Yom Kippur and the police will be deployed to synagogues across the country.
