Senate Republicans supported a short-term measure to keep the government running, but Democrats blocked it, insisting that any funding bill address health care concerns, particularly expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Repeated Senate votes to reopen the government have failed to reach the required 60 votes, with Democrats holding firm on their demands and Republicans refusing to include additional health care funding. There is no clear timeline for when the shutdown might end, as both parties remain at an impasse.

REPUBLICANS SUPPORTED A SHORT-TERM MEASURE TO KEEP THE GOVERNMENT RUNNING FOR THE NEXT SEVEN WEEKS THROUGH NOVEMBER 21ST. BUT DEMOCRATS BLOCKED IT, DEMANDING THE BILL ADDRESS HEALTH CARE CONCERNS. YOU'RE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON ANY EFFORTS TO GET THIS SHUTDOWN OVER WITH. WHAT'S THE LATEST? WHAT ARE YOU HEARING? Yeah, there was a vote earlier this hour. The same vote they've held now three total times to try and reopen the government. Previously, these votes have been to try and keep the government open. But this is the first time they've voted since the government shutdown 13 hours ago. That vote failed. Same margin that it failed by last night. 55 voting in favor, 45 voting against. Not enough Democrats flipping their votes over with Republicans to allow this vote to pass. To be clear, to satisfy the filibuster, this vote would need 60 votes. This bill would need 60 votes, excuse me, to pass and then be sent to President Trump's desk. So at this point, no further luck on trying to reopen the government. It's not clear when they're going to be able to do that. We are staring down the barrel of a prolonged shutdown. At this point, the plan, at least in the short term, is to try and keep running that vote over and over and over again and see if they can win by virtue of attrition. Take a listen. What's the plan here? Is it to just run this vote over and over and over again? Well, I think that's the short term plan, but I do think there's plenty of discussion going on. Senator Schumer can claim that, you know, there's no negotiation. The reality is, particularly in the Senate, where you have, you know, close to a 50-50 split and a lot of close friends across the aisle, there's just a lot of discussion that goes on. I suspect at the end of this, it will be a bit of an attrition of play, but in the process of that attrition, by attrition, I mean Democrats falling off, you know, the party line and supporting moving forward. And look, Maurizio, we've reported this multiple times, but Democrats have held firm. They say that they want Republicans to address health care, to address those expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies that make health care cheaper for many Americans as part of any sort of government funding solution. They're digging in, they're holding press conferences in the shadow of the Capitol Dome, making clear that that one demand of theirs stands, and they're not planning to let up on it anytime soon. Take a listen. This is a health care shutdown as they've stripped millions of people of their Medicaid health insurance going forward. It's indefinitely into the future, which is why we've got to stand and fight. They've stripped millions of people of ACA tax credits that they need in order to pay their premiums and get health protection for their families. They've caused everybody's health care costs to go up, which is why we say cancel the cuts, lower the costs, restore health care to the people. And I can just add to that quote right there, but Republicans at this point not playing ball. They're holding firm on trying to hold a vote to reopen the government without any of that additional health care funding. Republicans saying that this is totally clean, it's lacking poison pills. They're not trying to make any policy changes that Democrats, they say, would not support. At the same time, Democrats saying no in order to unlock our support for this government funding bill, give us something else to do. At this point, Republicans not budging on their desire to just keep government open and not give Democrats anything for it.
