Wildfires burning across Washington state have created a lot of work fire crews, causing fatigue as the fires continue to burn into fall.

Fire crews in Washington state are working extended hours to contain the Labor Mountain and Lower Sugarloaf wildfires, both of which were ignited by lightning. The fires, located near Cle Elum and Leavenworth, have expanded due to dry weather and wind, but authorities report that significant progress is being made.

Despite some rain in western Washington, dry conditions persist in the east, prolonging the fire season. Evacuation orders remain in place for some areas, and residents are advised to stay informed through local sheriff departments. Smoke and traffic disruptions continue, and officials urge the public to avoid closed areas and monitor air quality.

The lower Sugarloaf fire sparked the very same day, roughly 12 miles northeast of Leavenworth. 30 days into this firefight. How are crews holding up? Joining me now is Ryan Roderick from the Department of Natural Resources. So Ryan, thank you so much for being here. Crews in Chelan County have been working around the clock, thanks to the labor mountain and lower Sugarloaf fire. So what have you been seeing on the front lines? Well, what we've been seeing is some tired faces, but a lot of hard work being put in. Uh, those fires did expand significantly over the dry weather and wind event that we experienced. However, crews are now making pretty significant progress on those fires, and we'll continue to work hard on those as our fire season progresses and begins to turn the corner. A lot of people are expected to head to Leavenworth for Oktoberfest this weekend. So where are the areas that you're most worried about? Well, for Leavenworth itself, you can certainly expect to see smoke. You will see fire activity. We do ask that you just steer clear of where those closures closure areas are. Aziz, you head north there on the highway. Be aware of what those traffic and smoke impacts are, and make sure that you're giving our firefighters ample space to do the hard work they're doing on those fires. Now we had a little bit of rain yesterday. Is that impacting you at all there and helping? So for western Washington, we did have a rain event that will go a long way to moderate the fire season in western Washington. For eastern Washington, we are still experiencing some dry conditions. That rain didn't quite make it over the Cascade Crest, so we'll still be in an active fire season in eastern Washington, at least for the foreseeable future. But as we get closer into October, we will begin to round that corner into a less active season. So I know it's creating traffic problems, but are their homes and businesses in jeopardy right now? There are some evacuation levels that do remain in place. If you're worried that you may be impacted by those evacuations, please check with either the Kittitas or Chelan County Sheriff's Department. They will have those evacuation notices posted along with requirements for what to do in case of that evacuation. One longtime resident told me at nighttime, he just looks out and it just looks almost like an apocalypse. It's just a glow of red everywhere. What are crews focusing on right now to really target the most dangerous areas? We have been seeing some pretty active fire behavior on both those fires, but we have a significant amount of both air and ground resources on each of those fires and crews continue to make progress. And what do you expect the visibility to be like over the next couple of days? We are still gonna have some smoke impacts related to both those fires. You can learn more about that at the Department of Ecology and learn more about those smoke impacts on just make sure you're you're checking the weather, being aware of what that air quality index is and how it affects you.
