Good morning so what did the president tell you about today's meeting and do you get the sense that he really is as Comfortable as he says with a government shutdown Great to be with you Indeed President Trump does seem relatively comfortable with the idea of a shutdown because as he articulated to me in our conversation he believes the size right now the Democrats and the Republicans are so far apart that there's Very much a likelihood that there is a government shutdown in the coming days in brief Democrats want to see an extension of these health care benefits that were extended during the Kovat pandemic and Republicans are trying to focus on cutting government spending and a source close to President Trump told me over the weekend That President Trump actually will wield executive power if there is a shutdown to try to cut federal jobs and cut federal salaries So this is not a White House or president who's wary about the prospect And Bob in the past week We've we've seen President Trump escalate what critics would call a retribution campaign against political foes anyone connected to Investigations into him when he was out of the White House Is that what this is and and could there be more prosecutions coming as the president seems to suggest? Well, the president and Justice Department officials would not use the word retribution when you talk to them They say this is the Justice Department Trying to hold people to account But you're right many Democrats and some scattered Republicans on Capitol Hill have sounded an alarm about how some of these Prosecutions and indictments are taking place most notably James Comey the former FBI director who will be arraigned next month There are other names on the radar of those inside the administration who I've spoken with in recent weeks including senator Adam Schiff of California about his mortgage policy that's being scrutinized I'm told so is the mortgage policy of Letitia James the Attorney General of New York Who as we all recall she sued President Trump about his real estate assets in the state of New York And those are just two names among many who could face legal trouble from this Justice Department But the tension is is how you understand it Democrats are saying this is authoritarian Action this is a Justice Department that's out of control and Republicans are telling me constantly This is just a Justice Department that's holding these people to account and they say President Trump was suffered from Political prosecutions in recent years himself.
