UN sanctions are set to be reimposed on Iran on Saturday - after a failed bid by Russia and China to delay them. Only four countries voted in favour of the draft resolution.

The sanctions include an arms embargo, a ban on uranium enrichment, and a global assets freeze, effectively returning to the pre-2015 status before the landmark nuclear agreement.

Tensions have escalated between Iran and Western powers, with Tehran warning that renewed sanctions will impact its cooperation with UN nuclear inspectors. European countries have demanded greater access for inspectors, while Iran has expressed willingness to compromise, though not to the extent required by the Europeans. The situation is expected to increase regional tensions, as trust between the parties has eroded.

It was a last-ditch effort by Russia and China to delay the return of sanctions against Iran. But the resolution they submitted failed to get the nine votes it needs on the Security Council. The Russian deputy ambassador was furious over the actions of France, the UK and Germany, known as the E3. Now there certainly are no longer any illusions. These countries have definitively demonstrated that all of their assurances about their focus on a diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear program for all of these years were merely noise. Tehran warned imposing sanctions would have a long-term impact on its cooperation with the UN nuclear experts and said it would never compromise on its national sovereignty. Today's situation is the direct consequence of the United States' withdrawal from the JCPOA and the E3-EU failure to take any effective action to uphold their commitments. The United States has betrayed diplomacy, but it is the E3 which has buried it. The E3 took a tougher stance, insisting Iran give UN nuclear inspectors unlimited access to its bombed nuclear sites. Tehran said it was willing to make a compromise, but it fell short of European demands. I think the Europeans had long ago made a decision that they were going to snap back these sanctions, and it has less to do with Iran, the nuclear program, and more to do with the punishment of Iran for its support for Russia and Ukraine. Now Iran faces a wide range of UN sanctions, including an arms embargo, a ban on uranium enrichment, and a global assets freeze. Reimposing sanctions on Iran sets the clock back to before 2015. When the landmark agreement was reached, the idea back then was to convince Iran abandon its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions. But now the European countries that took part in the deal don't trust Tehran to end its program, which is likely to lead to more tension in the region.
