The United States, represented by Special Envoy Tom Barrack, stated that the issue of Hezbollah's disarmament is an internal Lebanese matter. While the U.S. recognizes Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, it also acknowledges the group's political role within Lebanon's Shia community. The U.S. emphasized it would not intervene directly, leaving the responsibility to the Lebanese government.

Despite Israel agreeing to a ceasefire with Hezbollah nearly a year ago, it's launched regular attacks into Lebanon. In an interview with Al Jazeera, US Ambassador and Special Envoy Tom Barrack says it's up to the Lebanese government to disarm the group. A very delicate situation as America has viewed Hezbollah as a foreign terrorist organization. Now having said that, we understand that within Lebanon Hezbollah itself is a legitimate political organization and consists of a large number of the Shia community. The Shia community being an equally dominant part of the the confessional system and that this is a complicated issue. The situation for the U.S. is we have no, no skin in this game other than trying to usher to a understanding of Lebanon as to what the problems are with Israel since Lebanon can't talk directly to Israel. We're not guarantors, we're not interested in pressuring anybody. We've been, we've been there before. It doesn't work well. Our president's not interested in regime change anywhere. He's not interested, especially in the Middle East, for more boots on the ground. He's not interested in sacrificing an American life for an internal dispute and what we've said is Lebanon, this is an internal issue for you. If you want one military, one state, then it's your responsibility to disarm those that are not in compliance with what you're requesting. That seems to be the Hezbollah and the Palestinians. The problem you have with Israel is Israel thinks you're not doing that.
