Intense monsoon rains in the southwestern United States have resulted in several deaths, particularly in Globe, Arizona, due to rapid flash flooding. The region has experienced up to three inches of rain, which, combined with the area's dry conditions, has significantly increased the risk of further flooding.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Umberto has reached category five status in the Atlantic Ocean, and another storm, Imelda, is prompting emergency preparations in North Carolina. Meteorologists are also monitoring a tropical depression near Cuba that could bring additional flooding to the Carolinas in the coming days.

Good evening everyone and thank you for joining us on this Saturday. We begin tonight with intense weather threats on both sides of the country tonight. Powerful monsoon rains in the southwest are blamed for several deaths in Arizona. The fast rising water caused flash flooding and chaos, the worst of it in the city of Globe, about 90 miles east of Phoenix. Meanwhile, Hurricane Umberto is roaring out in the Atlantic Ocean and another storm is soon to be named. Imelda, prompting North Carolina's governor today to declare a state of emergency. CBS News meteorologist Andrew Kozak leads us off with the very latest. Jericho. Good evening. Tonight we are watching the desert southwest where the monsoonal moisture still continues to have itself, giving us not only some heavy rain but potential flooding for southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. Let's talk about the totals because on top of what we already have 1 to 3 inches, we have an additional quarter of an inch or so. Doesn't seem like a lot, but with the topography and the dry conditions we normally see here, every little bit of rain is going to lead to more flooding. But the good news is that once we get into your sunday afternoon and early monday, we're going to start to turn this rain off. Great news for areas like Globe, about 90 minutes east of Phoenix where we saw some deadly flooding. In fact, in the last 48 hours, 2 to 3 inches of rain there. Let's switch gears and talk about Umberto. This is going to be now the hurricane that has been very strong the last couple of days, now reaching a category five with winds of 160 MPH. I want to talk about the track on this. It's going to go a little further north and west and eventually out to sea. We're also going to be watching some potential coastal issues. We're talking not only rip currents, but coastal flooding. And then we've got nine a tropical depression near Cuba. This has the potential to impact the Carolinas drink. Even if it doesn't hit the coast this week, we're going to watch this carefully. We could be looking at flooding rain monday and on all the way through the end of the upcoming week.
