The Arabian jasmine sustains many people here, as around 90% of the country's supply comes from this region, says local Salah Nash. For the people of Lahij, Arabian jasmine is an important source of livelihood for many families who rely on this plant for their daily income. The blossoms go to market, where they're bought up by traders. Yemenis have been using jasmine for years, in special occasions such as graduation ceremonies and weddings. Simple garlands can cost between $5 to $10, while elaborate bridal arrangements for men and women range from $20 to $40. Jasmine symbolises joy and happiness, as well as love, brotherhood and purity. Despite its importance, there is no official data to track annual output, due to the instability in the country. For ten years, Yemen has been split between an internationally recognised government in Aden and a Houthi administration in Sana'a. Even so, jasmine is a lifeline for many, and plays a central role in celebrations across the country. Here in Sana'a, groom Amin al-Maswari highlights its importance at all special events.
