I spoke with the former Rabbi of Chabad of Poway who was shot six years ago inside the synagogue. He calls what happened on Bondi Beach a horrible case of deja vu. I heard these four harrowing sounds. I had no idea what it was. I thought the table fell over. Rabbi Yisrael Goldstein is standing in the very spot that changed his life. I look and I see this anti-Semite terrorists in our lobby with the AR-15 aiming at me. In 2019 a gunman walked into the Chabad of Poway killing one person and injuring three others. These two fingers were affected but the rest of me survived. Goldstein says he was forced to relive that moment during a phone call he received around 1 a.m. I heard that my nephew was shot in the chest and they're trying to save his life. Heard about so many injuries. It was just very preliminary and our hearts were so just sunk that how could this possibly happen. He says his nephew Rabbi Eli Schlinger passed away. He was 40 years old with a family. He was dispatched to Sydney, Australia. He married my niece. I was at the wedding. I was celebrating it with them. Goldstein says Schlinger's whole life involved helping others. I saw a picture of him today 30 minutes before he was killed. He was praying with someone who at first didn't want to pray and he inspired them and they prayed together. He says these attacks won't extinguish his community's light and we need to be able to challenge that and darkness gets challenged only with light. From north county to east county this pain is felt all over. We're expecting to about around 200 people tonight. I met with Rabbi Rafi Andruzieh as he was preparing for the first night of Hanukkah. He says no matter the distance the shooting in Australia hits home. You don't think of it as a distant community thousands of miles away as the Jewish people were one people. While it hurts the community will push through. Around the world we're still going to light the menorah. We're still going to bring that message of light and hope. Andruzieh says the most important thing they can do now is embrace the meaning of Hanukkah and find light in the darkness. We have to be stronger Jews, prouder Jews, wear our Judaism as a badge of honor. Yasmine Ludi, ABC 10 News.
