At least one person has been confirmed dead and dozens more have been injured, with several patients receiving treatment at local hospitals. The explosion took place inside a coke oven at the facility, which is the largest coke manufacturing plant in North America. Emergency responders, including 15 ambulances, are on the scene conducting rescue operations for individuals trapped inside. Local health officials are monitoring air quality due to concerns about potential impacts from the incident. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area while the situation is ongoing.

We start today with breaking news in Pennsylvania. Officials are reporting a mass casualty incident at a U.S. steel plant there. Let's bring in CBS News correspondent Chanel Call. Chanel, what more can you tell us about what's going on? Yeah, we're keeping a close eye on this story, Elizabeth. Our local partners on the scene, KDKA, now reporting at least one person has been killed and dozens were injured in what's being described as a level three mass casualty situation. So here's what authorities say happened. They say an explosion took place just before 11 o'clock this morning at the U.S. steel Clareton Coke plant. This is about 50 miles south of Pittsburgh. We saw 15 ambulances responding to the scene and some initial images that we've looked at, I think we've processed them and we can share them with you and our viewers right now. They show huge plumes of black smoke on top of this facility. We heard from local residents who were on the scene. They reported feeling their homes shaking during this explosion. All right, these are the images I was telling you about. I mean, take a look at that. You can just imagine what it may have been like inside the facility when all this was happening. Let's talk about where this happened, Elizabeth, because this plant is a very big part of the Clareton community. It is, in fact, the largest Coke manufacturing facility in North America, and get this, it produces something like 4.7 million tons of Coke each year. And I just wanna take a moment to clarify what we're talking about here. This is not the pop drink Coke. It's actually a raw material that's used in steelmaking. So what happens, Elizabeth, is it's baked for a really long time at a really high temperature in order to try and remove impurities. This explosion today actually happened inside what's called the Coke oven. This is, if you can imagine, a row of ovens, sometimes hundreds of them, where that baking process actually takes place. Now, we heard from both the mayor and Democratic Senator John Fetterman earlier today talking about just how dangerous these jobs really are. Senator Fetterman, just sending out this tweet moments ago, I'll read you what it says. It says, my team and I are tracking this explosion and waiting for more information. For those in the area, please listen to local officials and avoid the area, keeping those injured and all who are impacted in my thoughts right now. We should also note that we've done a bit of digging here on this plant. There was actually an explosion here at the very same plant in the Coke oven back in 2010, 15 years ago, that injured 20 people. As for what's happening on the ground right now, Liz, here's what we know. Allegheny County Communications Director is telling us this is currently a rescue operation for people who were trapped inside that facility. Meantime, the local health department is also on site. They're keeping a close eye on air quality because there could be an issue with that following the explosion, and so they're looking at any impact surrounding this facility in the community broadly. Also, just seeing a statement come into our newsroom from Highmark Health, and it says, Liz, that Allegheny County Health Network Hospitals received a total of seven patients. AHN Jefferson Hospital currently treating five patients, while the AHN Allegheny General Hospital and AHN Forbes Hospital are treating one patient. We are waiting for some further updates on that, but again, we can report that at this point, this is considered to be a mass casualty situation, a level three situation. At least one person is killed, and we're hearing dozens have been injured. Chanel Call, thank you so much for that report.
