Police in Los Angeles have increased patrols at religious institutions in response to a mass shooting and arson attack at a Mormon church in Michigan, where at least four people were killed and eight others wounded. The suspect, who set the building on fire after driving through its doors and opening fire, was killed by police during a shootout.

Los Angeles officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, emphasized that the increased patrols are a precautionary measure. The LAPD and LA County Sheriff's Department had already planned to boost security at Jewish institutions during the High Holy Days. Some synagogues in the area have also adopted additional security measures, such as hiring armed guards, to ensure the safety of their congregations.

At least four people were killed, eight others wounded in the attack. Hundreds of people were inside at the time. Some were not able to get out while it was ablaze. Police killed the suspect during a shootout behind the building. Investigators think that the Marine used gas to start the fire. In the meantime, police patrols have been increased around LA's religious locations in response to that shooting yesterday. That's right. Coco McEvoy joining us now with more on that. Good morning. Good morning. That mass shooting in Michigan, of course, has places of worship across LA on high alert, and here's what we know right now. In Michigan, at a Mormon church, as you mentioned, near Flint, a gunman drove a vehicle through the front of the church during Sunday morning service and started shooting before setting the church on fire. This sparked a response from LA Mayor Karen Bass, saying LAPD will increase patrols at places of worship across Los Angeles, all out of an abundance of caution. LAPD and the LA County Sheriff's Department already announced last week that they would increase patrols around Jewish institutions during the High Holy Days, which continue through Thursday. Meanwhile, a small synagogue in Palos Verdes is already using several armed security guards to protect their services. So this is an evolution. This evolved in the last three years, but we became very serious about this in the last year. I'm saddened that we have we have to do this. I'm sad that you're here asking me these questions because 20 years ago, I could have never even dreamt that we would be in such a circumstance. The rabbi says they're doing what they can to make sure their place of worship is as safe as possible.
