A Greek restaurant close to the Eiffel Tower, which typically has long queues, noted a decline in visitors during June and July. Despite extensive preparations, including additional staffing and restricted vacations, the owner observed a drop in attendance of 30% to 60% on some days. However, since the start of the Olympic tests, there has been a slight uptick in activity relative to previous seasons, though movement restrictions in areas near major competition sites have posed challenges.

In another example, a classic French restaurant had to adjust to security measures that required the removal of its terrace, resulting in a 62% loss in seating capacity. This led to an increase in prices by over 30% to mitigate the loss of attendance. Despite these challenges, some restaurants in the vicinity reported a positive impact, with one establishment noting an increase in customers by 20% to 30% since the Olympic Games began. According to Choose Paris, the city's tourism agency, there was a 20% increase in visitors by the end of July compared to the previous year.



Paris restaurants still not feeling the promised Olympic benefit

On a typical weekday, this Greek restaurant, just a couple of hundred meters away from the Eiffel Tower, usually sees a massive queue winding down the street. More than 15 million visitors were expected in the French capital during these Paris Olympics. But the promised boon hasn't happened, according to this restaurant owner. We have been preparing for a year to receive these tourists that we have been waiting for a long time. We have been recruiting, we have been refusing staff vacations, etc. And we realized that in June, July, we had a sharp drop in attendance, going from 30% to 60% on some days. But we will say that since the beginning of the tests, we still have a slight increase compared to previous seasons, which still allows us to smooth this activity a little bit. Close to some of the major competition sites, restrictions ahead of the Games have limited movement in this area, making it difficult for tourists to access and pushing many residents to flee the capital. This classic French restaurant, a couple of streets away, had to remove its terrace due to security measures, losing approximately 62% of its seating capacity. It discourages a lot of people, and it's a loss of attendance. It's also a little random. It's very arbitrary. We don't know how the zones were defined. The difference of terrace is played on a sidewalk. In front, they still own it, we don't have it anymore. In order to make up for the losses, the restaurant raised its prices by more than 30%. But not everyone is complaining. This restaurant owner in the same area claims that they have been full since the start of the Games. The period since the start of the Games, compared to the same period, there is a slight increase of maybe 20%, maybe 30% on some days. It's really about the period of the Games. Previously, in June and July, there was a drop of 30-40% compared to the previous year. But for us, the period of the Games is rather positive. According to an initial estimate from Choose Paris, the capital tourism agency, the city has seen a 20% increase in visitors at the end of July compared to the previous year.
