A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has come into effect in Gaza, following ratification by the Israeli cabinet. The deal includes a pause in hostilities, exchange of remaining hostages, and withdrawal of Israeli troops to agreed-upon positions. 

The announcement was made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who credited US officials for their role in the negotiations. The ceasefire has been met with relief among Palestinians in Gaza, with reports of heavy shelling ceasing and crowds gathering in central Gaza. The agreement also provides for the entry of aid and the opening of the Rafah port.

Gaza ceasefire agreement has come into effect, Israeli military says

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas came into effect in Gaza on Friday, hours after Israel's cabinet ratified the deal to pause fighting and exchange the remaining hostages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the news in the early hours of Friday after convening with his cabinet, as well as US envoy Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner. We've fought during these two years to achieve our war aims. The central one of these war aims is to return the hostages, all of the hostages, to the living and the dead. And we're about to achieve that goal. We couldn't have achieved it without the extraordinary help of President Trump and his team, Steve Whitkoff and Jared Kushner. Here we are today because Hamas had to, they had to do this deal. The pressure was on them, they were backed up, and you've got the bigger army, you were making inroads, and that's what led to this deal. Tens of thousands of people gathered in Wadi Gaza, in central Gaza, started walking north after the military's announcement. Palestinians reported that heavy shelling ceased after the ceasefire was announced. We are announcing today that we have reached an agreement to end the war and aggression against our people, and to implement a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of the occupying forces, entry of aid, and the opening of the Rafah port in both directions, and exchange of hostages. As part of the ceasefire, Israeli troops began to withdraw to agreed-upon deployment lines, the military said. The announcement was met with widespread joy for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, who, after two years of intense bombardment, are now seeing relief on the horizon.
