The Nobel Committee cited her tireless work and principled stance against the current government, emphasizing the challenges faced by the opposition, including political persecution and suppression.

Machado, often referred to as Venezuela's 'Iron Lady,' has been barred from holding office and has faced threats to her safety. The Nobel Committee's decision was seen as a strong statement on the state of democracy in Venezuela, noting widespread poverty, systematic suppression of the opposition, and the country's shift towards authoritarianism.

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was just awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, with the Nobel Committee recognizing Machado for her, quote, tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. CBS News foreign correspondent, Remy Inocencio, was watching this announcement, which just happened, from London. Good morning, Remy. Tell us about this year's winner, and I guess the message the committee is sending with the selection of this opposition leader. Yes, absolutely, Errol. Machado is known by many as Venezuela's Iron Lady, and this is for her unbending resolve. And she's seen as both a hero or a villain, depending on which side of the country's political spectrum that you are on, to supporters, and really, she does have millions. She's been Venezuela's moral compass. She's been described as defiant and principled in the face of Nicolas Maduro's rule, who so many people believe basically stole last year's election from the opposition candidate. Now, Machado herself had been barred from holding office for 15 years. She's been in hiding since last year, and there have been threats on her life. There have even been rumors circulating that she could be sheltering at the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. Last year, she spoke to CBS News' Lilia Luciano right after she had been barred from running for office, talking about the situation in her country. Take a listen. And, of course, there is all the political persecution that is growing and growing. When a society doesn't see a future in their nation, they are forced to flee. The only way we can stop migration and even further bring those Venezuelans back home where we need them and want them is to give them future in Venezuela. Nicolas Maduro is everything but that. I mean, they have destroyed the country. But Machado is also opposed by millions, too. Many see her as too ideological, too polarizing, and she has refused to negotiate with the Maduro regime to break the country's ongoing political gridlock. Regardless, the Nobel Committee has taken a side today. They didn't name Maduro specifically, but they said Venezuela has evolved from a democratic country to a brutal authoritarian state. They said that most Venezuelans live in deep poverty, and even the few at the top enrich themselves, and that the opposition has been systematically suppressed by election-rigging, legal prosecution, and imprisonment.
