Memphis residents are split on whether or not the presence of the U.S. troops in their city is a good response to local crime.

The operation has led to 53 arrests, the seizure of 20 illegal guns, and the recovery of a missing child. 

The move has divided local residents, with some supporting the increased federal presence due to persistent crime, while others, including Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, strongly oppose the use of military personnel in the city. Mayor Harris is exploring legal avenues to stop the deployment, but the state's Republican governor has expressed support for the federal assistance.

A federal crime crackdown is picking up steam in Memphis, Tennessee and today's Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi were visiting the city to get a closer look at the operation. Fox's Asher Redd is in Memphis right now and Asher this is part of a president part of President Trump's promise I should say to send the National Guard to cities with these high crime rates. Well Simone Memphis Tennessee is consistently at the top of the list when it comes to U.S. cities with high crime rates so now the Trump administration says they're sending more than a dozen federal agencies here in hopes of turning things around. Earlier today Hegseth and Bondi toured the command center and spoke with federal agents about the operation. Bondi says the feds have already arrested 53 people and seized 20 illegal guns in the last 48 hours and she says that agents also found a missing child. About two weeks ago President Trump established the Memphis Safe Task Force. It includes the National Guard and more than a dozen other federal agencies like the FBI. The governor says National Guard troops won't be armed and won't make any arrests unless local law enforcement asks them to. I've been speaking with folks who live here and people are split on this issue. Many longtime residents say they want this because they're sick of the crime but some people think that the military troops patrolling the street is just going too far. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris says he is very much against the National Guard being here and wants people to resist. If we don't say no to this, the use of military against American citizens, when are we gonna stand up? When are we gonna say no? Stop thinking about the momentary drop in crime because that pales in comparison to losing your entire country. And Mayor Harris says the county is looking for legal options that could stop this federal deployment but the Republican governor here says he is embracing the help of the Trump administration and he will not back down.
