The Department of Homeland Security has announced that Indiana will open a new migrant detention center, named the Speedway Slammer, in partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The facility will be located at the Miami Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison situated north of Indianapolis, and will have the capacity to house over 3,000 people.

This initiative is part of a broader federal effort, funded by the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act', which provides for 80,000 new beds for ICE detention centers. Similar facilities are being planned in other states, including Arizona, Nebraska, and Louisiana. Officials stated that these centers are intended to address national needs related to immigration enforcement.
