Polish officials have recovered multiple Russian drones, some nearly intact and others fragmented, after a Russian aerial attack on Ukraine extended into Poland. Nineteen Russian objects reportedly violated Polish airspace, with those considered threats shot down with NATO assistance. Poland's Prime Minister described the event as a large-scale provocation and warned it brings Europe closer to open conflict than at any time since World War II. 

Russia's defence ministry stated it did not intend to attack Poland, but NATO and allied nations are treating the incident seriously. Poland has requested consultations under NATO's Article 4, which allows for discussions but does not automatically trigger a defensive response. The scale of the incident is seen as a significant escalation, with calls for enhanced air defence and a joint European air shield.

Earlier in the day, while speaking to Parliament, he said the situation brings us the closest we have been to open conflict since World War II. Poland says 19 Russian objects violated its airspace Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Those deemed a threat were shot down with the help of NATO. Russia's defence ministry says it did not plan to attack Poland. Whether it was intentionally or not, it is absolutely reckless. NATO's Secretary General acknowledged Poland's request for consultations under Article 4. That does not trigger a defensive response, but a discussion on next steps. I've asked our UK armed forces to look at options to bolster NATO's air defence over Poland. Canada's Minister of National Defence said multiple parties are gathering information about the violations. Given the extent to which President Putin has been called out, his unwillingness to have adult conversations about ceasefires, the games he appears to be playing, these are worrisome, but to a large extent also predictable. Just last week, Poland scrambled jets to protect its airspace from Russian violations. The difference this time is the scale of the incident. It's the Russian President probing NATO boundaries, says this Polish professor. This is like, you know, the next step of Putin basically trying to see what works with NATO, where the limit actually is of his actions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tonight is calling for a joint system of defence to create an air shield over Europe. Krystle Gamansingh, CBC News, London.
