Brazil's Supreme Court has sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison after convicting him of plotting a coup to remain in office following his 2022 election defeat. The court found Bolsonaro guilty of inciting a mob to storm government buildings and being aware of a plan to assassinate his rival, President Lula da Silva. 

Bolsonaro, who denies any wrongdoing, is currently under house arrest in Brasilia and intends to appeal the decision, though experts believe his chances of success are slim. He remains banned from running for office until 2030 under a separate ruling and is expected to endorse a candidate to challenge President Lula in the next election.

While streets across the country burst into celebration, many of Bolsonaro's supporters burst into tears and pleaded for the help of the American president, a staunch defender of his fellow far-right populist. I believe that God will raise someone up and that it will be Donald Trump to rescue our president from this injustice. Bolsonaro was convicted of plotting a coup to remain in office after his defeat in the 2022 election, inciting a mob to storm government buildings, and knowing of a plan to assassinate his rival, Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro denies all wrongdoing. He's currently under house arrest in Brasilia and plans to appeal, though experts say his chances of overturning the decision are minimal. He remains a powerful figure in Brazil, banned from running for office until 2030 under a different ruling. He's expected to name a number two to challenge President Lula in next year's election.
