Witnesses described panic at the scene, and the incident has prompted bipartisan condemnation from lawmakers, including figures such as Steve Scalise, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Lawmakers and public figures have emphasized the importance of political discourse without resorting to violence, noting the impact such incidents have on both the political climate and the broader community.

Officials: Weapon in Charlie Kirk shooting recovered; suspect tracked

A manhunt is underway for that person, but the FBI says it has recovered what it believes could be the weapon used in the shooting. We spoke to a witness about what happened earlier today on CBS News Mornings. Listen to this. I heard the shot, and at first, my first thought was that it was a firecracker and someone was trying to, you know, disrupt the event. It was a prank, but then I saw people running towards me, looks of horror on their face. It was people were afraid for their lives. This morning, we're also hearing from House Majority Leader Steve Scalise about the violent attack. You'll recall, of course, Scalise himself survived a politically motivated attack back in 2017 when he was shot at a congressional baseball game. He told CBS Mornings he believes political discourse is necessary, but violence is not. We cannot let what happened yesterday be the norm, and unfortunately, we've seen politics degrading where some people feel if they disagree with you politically, they've got to try to go and eliminate those people. That is not what America is. You know, we solve our differences at the ballot box. I want to bring in CBS News White House reporter Olivia Rinaldi. Olivia, as you know, reaction continues to pour in from lawmakers on all sides. What are you hearing this morning? Well, Vlad, it's certainly a bipartisan reaction to this really horrific shooting that we saw yesterday in Utah of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. We saw, you know, remarks from everyone, from Marjorie Taylor Greene to AOC, condemning this violence and the rhetoric. I want to play some sound from Mike Kennedy—he's the Republican from Utah—what he said specifically about the shooting that happened in his state. The United States of America and the Constitution promote free speech and the opportunity for all people, especially with political speech, to be able to speak their mind on the issues of the day. Charlie Kirk did that, and his voice will continue to be heard. One other reaction I want to draw your attention to is Gabrielle Gifford. She was the Arizona congresswoman who was shot in the head and survived. That was an act of political violence back in 2011. She said, The murder of Charlie Kirk breaks my heart. She provided her deepest sympathies. And she said these attacks have no place in the U.S., and talked about the rising threats that both Democrats and Republicans have seen in the last several months. Yesterday—or earlier in the month, I should say—Speaker Mike Johnson pointed out that the number of threats that lawmakers in Congress have gotten just this year alone are over 14,000. Last year, it was just 9,000 for the whole year. So we're really at this influx of moment where we're seeing this increase of violence, with a lot of questions about how they stop it. Yeah, and I think, just as an American, I'm heartened to hear our lawmakers on both sides of the aisle condemning this horrific act of political violence, Olivia, because you and I have found ourselves reporting on acts like this, and they have happened with increasing frequency, alarming frequency, in the last couple of years, not just Steve Scalise. There was Gabby Giffords. There were those lawmakers who were shot in their home. We've had attacks on the CDC. We've had Supreme Court justices that are targeted. And my hope is that these lawmakers realize that, in the words of President Lincoln in his first inaugural address, that we are all friends and not enemies. And in that address, the president appealed to what has become sort of a refrain that you hear over and over again—in fact, you heard it from the governor of Utah yesterday—to appeal to our better angels. Hopefully, our lawmakers get that message, and they continue, in a bipartisan fashion, bringing it home to our citizens. Olivia Rinaldi, are we staying with Olivia? We can continue to talk about it. Yeah, let's keep talking about it, Olivia, because— And, of course, Butler. Yeah, because—you know, as I said, I'm glad that you pointed out that it's not just Republicans, but even people who are on the very left side of the aisle, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who condemned the violence. Well, certainly. And to the point you were just making about all the violence and what we have covered, I was there last year in Butler. And you know, you have to think not only about the lawmakers, but the ramifications of shootings like this and the effects it have on the people who are there. My heart goes out to all of the students who watched this yesterday. And to that point, as well, Charlie Kirk was so important to Gen Z, to youthful voters, who I talk to a lot on the campaign trail, at his events often. And you know, I'm struck, because when this happened yesterday, I got a text message from my little brother, who's 18, who doesn't really follow politics, cares very little about what I do, and he knew about this right away. And that really just speaks to, you know, how important Charlie Kirk was to the conservative youth vote. Not only that, but having those conversations, those tough conversations on college campuses, discourse about, you know, what different people believe and where they can meet in the middle. You're having that conversation yesterday, and something like this happens. It sears in the minds of this generation, who has witnessed a lot of gun violence. So it's certainly something that, you know, I think about as it relates to the coming up generations.
