Police discovered multiple rudimentary explosive devices at the scene, described as intended to cause chaos rather than maximize casualties. The attack occurred during a church service, and witnesses described chaotic scenes as people fled for safety.

CBS News correspondent Ian Lee is there at the scene in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and joins us now. Good morning, Ian. What do we know about this church and what happened? Good morning, Errol. Yeah, and you nailed it right on the head. The big question this morning is what allegedly caused Thomas Jacob Sanford to come to this church yesterday morning and start shooting? The FBI is leading this investigation. Law enforcement so far isn't speculating on the motive, though they are treating this as an act of targeted violence. But what we do know is, from what police are saying, is Sanford came to this church, he rammed his vehicle into the building, and he started shooting, he lit fires. They said they found multiple explosive devices there. I spoke with the head of the ATF and asked, what kind of explosives were these? He said they were amateurish, rudimentary, more to cause chaos and confusion than really to kill people. But this was a very deadly attack. As four people were killed, many more are injured. And police, again, trying to figure out why this happened, Errol. And as they try to put together these clues, Ian, what do they know about the gunman and the timing which makes this all seem so purposeful and vicious, truly? Well, this was a time when everyone had gathered for service. They had sang songs, they had gone and had some prayers, they were starting to have some people preach to the congregation. That's when it happened. I spoke with someone who was there. He said that he heard the loud bang, and then he tried to help people flee the scene, flee into the woods. He saw the gunman starting shooting. He then ran into his wife. He helped some elderly ladies escape in their car. Just then the gunman popped out and started shooting at him. They, fortunately, only sustained minor injuries. But there are a lot of feelings this morning. One, this man told me, was a feeling of survivor's guilt that he was able to get out of there with his wife and with his 16-year-old son, and other people weren't. Errol.
