The superintendent of Iowa's largest school district has been arrested and put on leave. Ian Roberts was arrested by ICE officials last week and is accused of living and working in the U.S. illegally. Olivia Calmes has the latest.

Ian Roberts, the superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was arrested by federal immigration officers on allegations of living and working in the United States illegally. The arrest followed a letter from the State Board of Education revoking his license after learning of his undocumented status. 

Authorities stated that Roberts, originally from Guyana, had overstayed his student visa and was not authorized to work after 2020. An immigration judge had previously issued a final order of removal. During his arrest, officials reported finding a loaded gun, a knife, and $3,000 in cash in his vehicle. The school board has placed Roberts on unpaid leave and stated they were unaware of any immigration issues at the time of his hiring.

Well, people here have told me that they are shocked. They're processing this. I'll tell you a little bit more about how this what happened leading up to this. But right now, there's a special session that the Des Moines Public Schools is holding behind me, and they've been in a closed session for over an hour. We expect an announcement about unpaid leave for Dr Roberts. This is all following a letter that he received today from the State Board of Education, revoking his license and saying he does not have authority as a superintendent any longer once they've been now informed of his legal status. Now, ice tells Fox Roberts is an undocumented immigrant from Guyana, DHS, saying he last came to the U. S. On a student visa in 1999, but wasn't authorized to work after his employment card expired in 2020. Ice officials also saying an immigration judge gave Roberts a final order of removal back in May of 2024. Federal agents say Robert tried to speed away after they were attempting to take him into custody back on Friday. They say he ditched his district owned car near wooded area. They did eventually arrest him and inside his car. DHS found a loaded gun, a knife and $3000 cash. They tell us the Des Moines Public School board chair said they didn't know of any immigration issues Dr Roberts may have had. And when he was hired, the Iowa State Board of Education says he signed a form confirming he was a U. S. Edison. The board chair, Jackie Norris, she's inside right now in this last couple of days, quoted Roberts booked asking the community for quote radical empathy as they figure everything out.
