The Northeast recorded its coldest day of the season, but forecasters expect temperatures to rise as high pressure settles over the Southeast United States. A west-southwest flow will bring warmer air to the Midwest and Northeast, followed by a cold front midweek that will be less severe than the recent cold snap.

Another front is expected over the weekend, bringing rain and snow, especially across the northern tier from the Great Lakes to the Northeast. Despite these changes, the cold is not forecast to reach the severity of the previous weekend, and the South Central and Southeastern regions will generally see warmer conditions.

The coldest day of the season across the Northeast on Monday, but the good news is that cold is going to start the lead. It begins as we get into Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure settles in across the Southeast of the United States. There's going to be a flow coming right back in out of the West Southwest. That means warming across the Midwest and the Northeast. Cold front will be arriving Wednesday into Thursday. That will bring another shot of cold air, but it's not going to be as cold as what we've seen. Then another front arrives over the weekend with some rain and snow. While it does turn a little colder with each frontal boundary across the Northern tier of the United States, from the lakes toward the Northeast, it's not going to be nearly as cold as what we went through this weekend. And from the South Central and Southeastern United States, for the most part, it warms up.
