The release of Open AI's ChatGPT has accelerated the development of artificial intelligence and warnings about its impact on society.

OpenAI has introduced new safety features for ChatGPT, enabling parents and guardians to link their accounts with their teenagers' accounts and manage various settings. These controls allow parents to set usage times, disable memory mode, and prevent their teens' data from being used to train AI models. The update also includes a system to flag signs of self-harm, alerting parents if a review team determines a teen is in acute distress. The changes come amid heightened concerns about ChatGPT's influence on young people, including a recent lawsuit alleging the platform contributed to a teen's suicide. OpenAI acknowledged the risks and stated that while the new controls are a step forward, they can still be bypassed by determined users.

According to the company, parents are now able to link their accounts with their teenagers chat GPT accounts to manage the settings. It says these new controls can set times when chat GPT cannot be used, turn off that memory mode and not allow your teens information to help train their AI. Open AI says that chat GPT will also flag signs that a team may be thinking about self harm. And if a review team determines that the user is in what they call acute distress, parents will get an email text or a push alert on their phone. These changes come weeks after California father Matthew rain testified before Congress and his family sued open AI alleging their son died by suicide after chat GPT helped the team plan his death. Open AI has responded saying it extends its deepest sympathies and is reviewing the filing. And the reality is you guys, there's major risk when you use chat GPT. The center for countering a digital hate showed that when it's researchers posed as teens, more than half of the responses were harmful, often involving substance abuse, disordered eating, self harm and suicide and open AI as developers admit the parental controls, they can be bypassed if someone is determined enough.
