Local surf club volunteers and younger members also played a crucial role, rescuing children and parents while the attack was ongoing. The community has since rallied behind Ahmed, raising nearly a million dollars for his recovery through a GoFundMe campaign, with support coming from around the world.

In a moment of chaos and danger, Ahmed Al-Ahmed stepped up without hesitation. The father of two tackled one of the gunmen from behind and wrestled the weapon from his hands. As the shooter backed off, Ahmed put the gun down, signalling he was unarmed. One brave act that no doubt saved several lives. But it came at a cost. The second gunman opened fire on him, hitting Ahmed twice in the shoulder, his cousin rushing to his side. He was very scared. He was looking, he told me like, I want to die, I love you, stay with me, don't leave me. Ahmed's parents were also with him at hospital and spoke of his heroism. Telling our cameras that their son, who moved to Australia from Syria 13 years ago, doesn't see colour or difference. To him, all lives are equal. A belief that was shared across Bondi. When gunshots cut through Christmas celebrations at the local surf club, volunteers' life-saving skills were called into action. I think one of the things my son said was, we were there for a reason. And I think, I think he's right. Grabbing medical kits and using surfboards as makeshift stretchers, they saved as many lives as they could. The younger members went out while the shooter was still shooting and rescued, literally rescued kids and parents from the playground. Very proud of them. Very proud of them, I have to say. These heroic acts are a testament to how Australians come together in the face of tragedy. And today they continue to do so, many rallying behind Ahmed in his recovery. A GoFundMe has reached almost a million dollars and it's still climbing, with donations coming in from around the world, hand-delivered too. I'm not sure if I would have done the same in his position. He's quite a unicorn in this regard. Now out of surgery, Bondi's hero can focus on healing, as the shaken community slowly does the same.
