World leaders, friends, and historians have been paying tribute to former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter, who has passed away. Carter, who spent his formative years in Plains, Georgia, remained active in his community and beyond, continuing to teach Sunday school well into his nineties. Despite his time as President of the United States, he is perhaps more renowned for his humanitarian efforts post-presidency.

Carter's reputation for humility and distaste for the ceremonial aspects of Washington, D.C., made his presidency unique and challenging at times. His legacy, however, is largely shaped by the massive humanitarian work he performed after leaving the Oval Office. Praises have poured in from former President Bill Clinton, who presented Carter with the Medal of Freedom, and from former President Barack Obama, acknowledging Carter's enduring decency and dedication to serving others.

In addition to American leaders, world figures have acknowledged Carter's achievements, notably his efforts in battling diseases such as the guinea worm, with reported cases plunging by 99% since the Carters took on the mission in the 1980s. Plans for Carter’s memorial services are taking shape, starting with a motorcade to the Carter Center in Atlanta, followed by his lying in state at the Capitol in Washington, before his state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral. Carter will ultimately be laid to rest in Plains, Georgia, where his journey began.

Jimmy Carter may have lived here for four years but to really know the 39th president you had to go to Plains, Georgia where he was born and raised and eventually retired with his wife First Lady Rosalyn Carter. And Paul, there continues to be an outpouring from American and world leaders tonight because this president had major impacts around the world working to eradicate guinea worm in developing nations. Yeah, so first there's going to be a motorcade to the Carter Center in Atlanta where he's going to lie in repose for about 36 hours. Carter will then be flown here to Washington where he will lie in state at the Capitol. And of course, there will be a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral before he is taken back home to Plains where he will be laid to rest in the family plot. Thank you, Katie.
