The Venezuelan government condemned the action as 'theft and hijacking' and stated it would appeal to the UN Security Council.

US officials allege the tanker was transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela's state oil company as part of a shadow fleet, despite the vessel not being on the US Treasury's sanctioned list. The US has increased its military presence in the Caribbean and conducted operations against vessels it claims are involved in narco-trafficking, resulting in over 100 deaths since the summer.

The move comes just days after President Donald Trump announced a blockade of sanctioned oil vessels entering and leaving Venezuela. According to Homeland Security, the ship that was seized is the Centuries, which is a Chinese-owned, Panama-flagged oil tanker, but it is not on the US Treasury's list of sanctioned vessels. Washington alleges that it was transporting sanctioned oil from Venezuela's state oil company and operating as part of the country's shadow fleet. The moves by the US mark an escalation in its activities in the region. Since this summer, the United States has deployed a massive military presence in the Caribbean while striking numerous boats, alleging they are narco-trafficking vessels. Those operations have killed more than 100 people.
