As a furious Denmark summoned the US ambassador for an explanation from its erstwhile NATO ally, Brussels also waded in, backing Copenhagen. Preserving the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, its sovereignty and the inviolability of its borders is essential for the European Union. The Greenland Prime Minister also took to social media on Monday to say the new development changed nothing, and that only Greenlanders would decide their own future. Relations between Greenland and Denmark haven't always been the smoothest. The territory of 57,000 people has the right to declare independence, something a majority there do want, but not as part of the US, according to a January poll.
