San Diego police are still searching for the driver who they believe hit and killed 61-year-old Celeste Necochea in a hit-and-run crash on Sea World Drive around midnight last Saturday.

Police are investigating the death of Celeste Nekochia, a 61-year-old woman who was found dead on the side of the road in Ocean Beach. Authorities believe she was the victim of a hit-and-run incident on SeaWorld Drive, with her body discovered approximately 12 hours after the collision. Nekochia, described by locals as a kind and helpful member of the community, had lived in the area for over a decade and was known for her generosity despite being unhoused.

The incident occurred when a driver reportedly rear-ended another vehicle, forcing it off the road before fleeing the scene. Police cleared the area but did not find Nekochia until later. The medical examiner's office has not yet determined the exact cause or time of her death. The community has expressed sadness over her passing and the circumstances surrounding it.

Every business I walked into, every resident I spoke to had fond memories of Celeste. She was a very kind, intelligent and helpful person. They tell me she was an unhoused neighbor who called Voltaire Street home for more than a decade, picking up scraps on the side of the road and taking food from kind strangers. She'd always like want to volunteer and sweep our parking lot for us. People who knew her say Celeste offered to give back when she could. She would leave a $10 bill at some businesses that supported her and walk away before she was seen. I witnessed her giving what little she had to other homeless people to help them out and so when I heard that she had passed this way it was very heartbroken. San Diego police believe Celeste was the victim of a hit and run on SeaWorld Drive at around midnight last Saturday. Police say the driver rear-ended someone else pushing their car off the road and then ran away. Officers arrived and cleared the area but no one saw Celeste's body on the side of the road until 12 hours later. By then she had died in the bushes nearby. Unfortunately maybe she was alive, maybe she wasn't though so we don't know and that's what makes us even more sad. It's sad to think that somebody you know couldn't be around their loved ones and have comfort in their last moments. SeaWorld Drive was closed for five hours as police gathered evidence for their investigation but the medical examiner's office says it's still unknown how or when Celeste died. It's tragic, it's honestly nobody deserves, nobody deserves to go through what she went through. Leaving behind a community who saw her struggle and loved her anyways.
