Authorities in Lisbon have confirmed that at least 15 people were killed and 18 others injured, including a child, after a streetcar derailed and crashed near a well-known tourist spot in the city. The accident involved the iconic Gloria streetcar, which has been operating since 1885 and is popular with both residents and visitors.

Eyewitnesses reported that the streetcar appeared to lose control while descending a steep hill, ultimately crashing into a building on a narrow road. Emergency workers remain at the scene as investigations into the cause of the derailment continue. City officials and the president of Portugal have expressed condolences to the victims' families.

Well, it's a frankly horrifying and heart-wrenching situation in the Portuguese capital with so many people killed and seriously injured in this accident. Now, anyone who's ever visited Lisbon will be familiar with the iconic yellow and white streetcar or funicular, which goes up and down a steep downtown hill in tandem with another one going the opposite way. And all we really know is that one of these cars derailed and could be seen lying on its side on a narrow road that it travels along. Now, you can see that its sides and its top were partially crumpled, and it appears to have crashed into a building where the road bends. Now, eyewitnesses told local media that the streetcar had, in their words, careened down the hill, apparently out of control. Now, several dozens of emergency workers remain at the scene while the cause of the accident continues to be investigated. The accident reportedly occurred at the start of the evening rush hour, which is around 6 p.m. Now, the streetcar is known as Gloria and has been in operation since 1885 and can carry around 40 people. It's commonly used by Lisbon residents and tourists alike, as we've been saying. Now, last year, Lisbon hosted around 8.5 million tourists, and the streetcar is, of course, a popular attraction. Now, Lisbon's mayor told reporters at the scene that the city was in mourning, and we've also heard from the country's president, who offered his condolences to the affected families. Back to you.
