He criticized the current name as being overly politically correct and indicated he would seek congressional approval for a formal change. The rebranding included physical changes at the Pentagon, such as updating signage and official titles.

The announcement coincided with the deployment of F-35 jets to Puerto Rico as part of ongoing military operations against Venezuelan drug cartels. Recent actions included the destruction of a boat allegedly carrying drugs and gang members, and heightened tensions following Venezuelan fighter jets approaching a U.S. destroyer. President Trump warned that any further provocations by Venezuelan jets would result in them being shot down.

The Department of War was the title used until 1949, when branches of the military were united under the Department of Defense, a name President Trump described today as too politically correct. As he signed the executive order rebranding the department, the word defense was literally being chiseled off the walls of the Pentagon, and Secretary Pete Hegstead's nameplate was updated to call him the Secretary of War. The president says he'll seek congressional approval for a formal name change. Today's moves came as 10 F-35 jets were deployed to Puerto Rico as part of the Pentagon's growing military operation against Venezuelan drug cartels. Earlier this week, a boat allegedly carrying drugs and 11 Venezuelan gang members was blown up in a U.S. strike, and after two Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew near an American destroyer Thursday, the president today said if Venezuelan jets try something similar again, they'll be shot down.

The White House said the U.S. is sending 10 F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico. It comes as the Defense Department confirmed that two armed Venezuelan F-16 fighter jets flew over a U.S. Navy ship in the region on Thursday.
