Hope is fading of finding survivors in the rubble of homes devastated by a powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan over the weekend that killed more than 1,400 people, as emergency services struggle to reach remote villages.

A severe earthquake has struck Kunar province in Afghanistan, leaving entire villages destroyed and more than 1,400 people dead. Many families have lost multiple members, with survivors recounting that little outside help has reached them, and local residents have been left to rescue the injured and bury the dead.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with helicopters being used to transport the injured and deliver essential supplies due to blocked roads. With bodies still trapped under rubble and many communities cut off, the death toll is expected to rise. The Afghan government has appealed for international assistance, but aid is arriving slowly, and many survivors remain exposed and without shelter.

Entire villages lie in ruins, homes flattened, families left with nothing. The only way in or out is by helicopter. Roads remain blocked, cutting off desperate communities. In Kunar province, the worst hit in Monday's earthquake, most families lived in fragile mudstone homes. They are now sifting through rubble, salvaging what little remains. 22 people of my family died. My uncle, my cousins, my wife, my uncle's wives, my cousin's wives and the rest were children. All of them perished. No help provided to my people. Nobody came to us other than the locals who rescued the injured and buried the dead. Survivors speak of massive losses. We have at least six to seven hundred dead here, 70 villages destroyed out of the 120 highland villages. Since this is a mountainous area, most of our people live high up in the mountains, so much of the highlands and villages in these mountains are completely destroyed. Pilots have been flying around the clock, ferrying the injured and delivering aid. We are trying to shift the injured as soon as possible. On one hand, we are rescuing the injured, and on the other hand, we are continuing flying day and night by bringing water, food and other necessities aid so that the families affected by this tragic incident can be helped. Some make it to the Afghan capital, Kabul, transported from Kunar province, but many more remain stranded. Families are sleeping out in the open, exposed to the elements. Some walk for long distances on foot, trying to reach help. With bodies still trapped under the rubble, the death toll is expected to climb. The Afghan government has appealed for international aid.
