The designer once called his 1970s reimagining of the menswear jacket the, quote, starting point for everything that came after. Armani combined the flair of a designer with the acumen of a businessman running a company that earned about $2.7 billion a year. He was born in 1934 in Piacenza, a town in the industrial heartland of northern Italy. His family moved to Milan after World War II. Armani had been unwell for some time and was forced to drop out of Milan's Men's Fashion Week in June, the first time in his career that he had missed one of his catwalk events. Called King Giorgio by many, the designer was known for overseeing every detail, even fixing models' hair before they walked out onto the runway. The Armani group said a funeral chamber will be set up on Saturday and Sunday in Milan, followed by a private funeral at a later date.
