CEOs from some of the nation's biggest tech companies sat down for a dinner with President Trump on Thursday. Among those present were Tim Cook, Sam Altman, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.

He also discussed plans to implement tariffs on companies not investing in US-based semiconductor manufacturing, aiming to encourage domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.

Thank you, Katie. Well, at the White House, CEOs of some of the nation's biggest tech companies sat down for a dinner with President Trump. And at the table, 33 people in total, including Tim Cook, Sam Altman, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg, just to name a few. Here's some of what the president had to say as the night began. I just want to thank everybody for being here. I want to thank the media. They've been very nice lately, although I'm still here. They made a couple of bad predictions. That was not good. I've never had that feeling before. I went to an event and people are coming up to me and saying, you're still here. I said, what do they mean by that? I didn't hear about this. But anyway, but I do. The press has been great in terms of this industry and they understand the importance of it. This is taking our country to a new level. We're leading the world. We're leading China, but we're leading the world by a lot. And we're leading it because of the people around the table. And all I can do is implement and make it a lot easier for you. And I'll be doing that 100 percent. All right, let's bring in Bloomberg tech reporter Riley Griffin. Riley, pretty extraordinary dinner there. It's still going on, we're told. Have you ever seen all those tech executives together in one room at the same time? They're not all buddies, by the way. No, many are competitors. And in fact, I have not seen all of those tech execs together. The last time we saw several of them was President Trump's inauguration, if you remember them sitting before his soon to be cabinet. Just truly a stunning image. Many pledges of investment in infrastructure. The president really underscored that he wants tech to stay in the United States, to stay competitive against China as it accelerates its artificial intelligence game. But what a sight to see tonight, and we will continue to be reporting out of this event what's said. Yeah, it was interesting. He just brought up China as well. And I'm wondering if that message is being sent to President Xi as well, given the message that President Xi was sending to the rest of the world earlier this week with his military parade. We can talk about more about that a little bit later. But I want to talk about something that the president brought up, and it was semiconductors. Let's take a listen. Yeah, I have. I've discussed it with the people here. Chips and semiconductors. And we'll be putting tariffs on companies that aren't coming in. We'll be putting a tariff very shortly. You probably are hearing we'll be putting a fairly substantial tariff on. Not that high, but fairly substantial tariff with the understanding that if they come into the country, if they're coming in, building, planning to come in, there will not be a tariff. If they're not coming in, there's a tariff, fairly substantial.

A powerful aftershock struck eastern Afghanistan late on Thursday night. More than 2,200 people have already died the quake. Rescue crews are still searching remote villages, but rescue efforts are hampered by rough terrain and aftershocks. The World Food Programme says food stocks are running low and could be exhausted within weeks.
