Canada’s first WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo, has unveiled what they will be wearing during their inaugural season. But as CBC's Tyler Cheese reports, some fans say they've noticed an issue.

The Toronto Tempo, the WNBA's first Canadian team, unveiled their official home, away, and alternate uniforms at the Eaton Centre. The design process involved collaboration with Nike and focused on creating a unique look for the team. 

The uniforms feature a prominent CIBC sponsor logo, which sparked some criticism on social media. Experts explained that large sponsor logos are standard in the WNBA and other global sports, especially in women's leagues that rely more heavily on sponsorship revenue. The jerseys will be available for fans to purchase starting next month.

Toronto's new WNBA team officially has a jersey. The uniform was unveiled at the Eaton Centre on Tuesday. We started the process over a year ago working really closely with our agency partners, the marketing team, our friends at Nike, and we wanted to make sure that we were unique. The home and away jerseys were revealed as well as a third alternate version, but some fans took to social media to express disappointment over one specific element, the prominence of the CIBC logo. Experts say they aren't surprised by the placement. When you look at a lot of the other WNBA jerseys, many of them have very visible, large logos on the front of their jerseys. And so we may be used to seeing different types of jerseys that don't have that sort of prominent sponsorship, but if we are talking apples to apples in the WNBA, it's very normal. CIBC is a founding partner of the team, and while some argue the size of the bank's logo is the problem, this kind of marketing has become more and more common in professional sports all around the world. If you look at European soccer, Indian cricket league, Barcelona, Real Madrid, all of these leagues, all of these teams, on their kits the branding is getting bigger and bigger. Juventus, for example, a big, big Jeep logo on their kit. So this is something that we're seeing lots of around the world. Experts also say it's more common in women's sports, which don't have the same revenue streams as men's sports. Women leagues like the WNBA are trying to generate as much revenue as they can from sponsors. So having a logo larger than maybe what would be found on an NBA jersey is maybe a way to placate potential sponsors. Despite the online backlash, some feel the team did an overall good job of incorporating the sponsor logos. The colors match, they're consistent. There are some cases where the color logo vision is way off. I feel like they did a pretty good job in aligning the color scheme. And some argue that having a big bank make a major investment in women's basketball should be seen as a good thing. CIBC stood up as one of the founding partners of this inaugural team here in Canada. The first WNBA expansion outside of the United States. It's a huge deal.
